Speier’s fireside tableau shows a weather beaten fisherman puffing on his pipe and 'spinning a yarn' as he mends his nets. The attentive girl listens as she waits on the water boiling on the fire to fill one of the kettles. His narrative is told through his detailed scenes and figures. The earthy tones of this interior create atmosphere. Speier was born in Dresden, Germany in 1920. His portraits of everyday German life for the working class are very distinctive. He often depicts farmers or fisherman in the intimate settings of their meagre homes.
